Kruger: In Search of the Big 5

Our first stop in Africa was Kruger National Park. We opted for a self-drive safari in our cheap little rental, which worked surprisingly well for us. The roads were great –most were blacktop but even the dirt secondary roads were well maintained. The accommodation within the park was much better than we expected, complete with braii facilities that we used each night. Most importantly, wildlife seemed to be everywhere. We really didn’t need expert guides as much as we needed time to explore.

Luckily, time is something we have plenty of these days. So over three sun filled days, we kept binoculars and an animal identification guide at the ready while we scanned the bush for signs of wildlife. This is what we saw….

  1. Great pictures, Joanna. So you saw the BIG FIVE. The kudu, & white rhino are the most elusive.
We weren’t able to spot them in the Serengeti…have fun

    • No, we missed the leopard but we did see 2 of the 120 cheetahs in the park. We got extremely lucky with that.

      The big 5 are:
      Lion
      Elephant
      Rhino
      Leopard
      African buffalo

  3. This was my treat for tonight: I sat down with a glass of rose during our 95 degree heat wave and read your refreshing post. Joe and I just loved Kruger. It was our favorite part of Africa. Such an amazing and special experience you are having. Enjoy – and keep posts coming!
